Did you know: Paving is going green and saving taxpayers billions in the process

During 2011, taxpayers saved over $2.2 Billion as a result of using recycled materials and new energy saving technologies implemented for asphalt pavement. The savings have been growing every year as asphalt producers continue to pave the way towards sustainable, energy efficient paving practices.

The use of Recycled Asphalt Shingles (RAS) and Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP), along with Warm Mix Asphalt ( WMA) have brought some of the largest economic and energy savings. By using the recycled asphalt materials, over 21.2 million barrels of liquid asphalt binder were saved in 2011 alone. That directly saves all of us taxpayers billions of dollars per year. The reclaimed asphalt also has a huge reduction on the amount of natural resources needed to produce virgin asphalt binders.

Reclaimed materials are being combined with warm mix asphalt technologies that allow for the use of lower temperatures during asphalt production. This reduces energy demands and emissions and altogether translates to long term benefits to the planet’s environment and health.

“The asphalt pavement industry has a long history of adapting new technologies and innovations to make a better product” said National Asphalt Pavement Association president, Mike Acott. The use of recycled asphalt pavement reached 66.7 million tons in 2011, which is a 19% increase over 2009. Recycled asphalt shingles usage climbed nearly 53% since 2009. Warm mix asphalt technology saw the largest gains and was estimated at 69 million tons, exceeding 300% increase over 2009.

These are just some of the technologies making a difference in the paving industry. We all benefit from these innovations that stretch our tax dollars, and reduce the long term impact on the environment. Each year the efficiencies continue to improve and we work toward delivering greener roads for us all.
