Hot Crack Filling is one the most popular services we offer. This video provides a example of how the process is used to create a professional seal in cracked pavement. It is the best return for the money, if done at the right time, which is when a crack starts.
If let go, a crack will become larger and lead to more cracks and then a much more expensive repair or replacement. It is a hot applied (near 400 degrees F) liquid asphalt material. It is an actual effective repair because it bonds to the pavement, due to the high temperature versus a cold applied product, which does not adhere nearly as well. It keeps water from penetrating the crack and damaging the base material under the pavement.
The criteria for this method is that there needs to be some space, approx 1/16th of an inch or more, in the crack, so that the material can bond to the pavement. If it just a hairline crack the material can not get into the crack to perform an effective repair.
If the cracks are of a criss cross pattern, like a spider web or alligator skin, then crack filling is not recommended. This indicates that there is a problem with the sub base under the pavement and a cut out repair or full replacement is recommended. This type of cracking is a sign of water penetration into the sub base and/or poor installation.
